The Johnny Price IV Non-Profit Foundation

Client Overview

Established in 2016 in memory of John “Johnny” Price IV, the mission of the JP4 Non-Profit Foundation is to enrich the lives of youth in underserved communities through healthy activity, healthy meals and healthy relationships.

The Challenge

I took on a client project with a small group of designers with the goals to identify key areas for optimizing the growth and expansion of the Johnny Price IV Foundation. With a time span of one week to research and design, our team decided to dissect the opportunity areas within JP4 and prioritized the design of what would be most valuable, given our time constraint.

The Solution

Our design team created a STRATEGY PROPOSAL that would be easily integrated into the existing processes that JP4 possesses. This proposal included

  • prototypes

  • guides and resources

  • slideshow reports, documenting how the proposed strategy would affect the existing process and growth for future programming.

These were then sent to the client, the Johnny Price IV Foundation for review and implementation.

The Process


Phase One : Discovery & Research

To kick off the project, our design team worked together to collect our thoughts in a Team Collaboration tool: A Figma whiteboard. With regards to the organization, their audience, and the problem space as a whole, we wanted to answer the following questions—

  • What do we KNOW?

  • What ASSUMPTIONS do we have?

  • What are some UNKNOWNS that we have questions about?

Stakeholder Interview

We grouped similar thoughts into questions to be asked in a STAKEHOLDER INTERVIEW with the Executive Director, in which he introduced us to the organization’s guiding philosophies, goals, and passions, and how the programs and activities offered by JP4 were executed.

Deep Dive Analysis (Problem Analysis)

To gain a deeper understanding of the problem space in which JP4 operates, our design team went hunting to find the answers to the following question:

  • What exists in this space and how well does it work?

  • What problems still exist?

  • What’s important to the audience/decision makers?

  • Where are opportunities to make a change to this experience?

Our team looked for answers within the competitive landscape, in existing documentation/secondary research, and data/surveys that the client was able to share with us during AND after the Stakeholder Interview. We collected our thoughts and findings in a Figma board for later review and discussion.

Guiding Strategy Statement

After collecting our findings during our DEEP DIVE of JP4’s information, our design team discussed and finalized our Guiding Strategy Statement by dissecting the opportunity spaces within JP4 and prioritizing what we could address, given our time constraints;

Our strategy statement will focus on students participating in JP4 Diamond Club to feel represented in JP4 and in their communities. This representation is important so that students are able to create and live healthy well-balanced lifestyles. We will do this by focusing on gathering student input and demonstrating impact. As a result we hope to see a change in student retention and growth of JP4’s reach.

Touchpoint Strategy Map

With our Strategy Statement in mind, our team developed a Touchpoint Strategy Map that would guide our ideation prototypes and proposed solution, going forward.

Using the Divide-and-Conquer strategy, we decided to split the team for the development of each of the proposed touchpoints, then come together to discuss and finalize the prototypes for our touchpoint.

Proposed Solution & Prototypes

Our design team created a STRATEGY PROPOSAL that would be easily integrated into the EXISTING processes that JP4 possesses. This included a PROTOTYPE PACKAGE containing each team member’s touchpoint prototypes, guide/resource lists, and slideshow reports, documenting how the proposed strategy would affect the existing process and growth for future programming. Our proposal was the implementation of an improved survey method of data collection, increased implementation of the current team members (Mentors, Interns, and Board Members), and the implementation of data synthesis to visualize the student data in a way that would help the JP4 Foundation to appeal to potential sponsors/donors in the future.

My Touchpoint Prototype was a simulation of a Data Hand-Off Documentation from the Interns to the Board Members.

Based on existing information, student quotes, and shared stories, our team concluded that JP4 provides programming that students thoroughly enjoy and find value in. However, missing from this process is the collection of data that supports JP4’s future reach in content creation and in engaging new donors and partners. Incorporating a survey into the daily check-in and having the mentors facilitate this will leverage systems and activities JP4 is already using to optimize their resources. Combining the daily check-ins and survey is an intentional way to use key touchpoints to collect responses. This also provides JP4 with a jumping off point in their collection of key data that they can expand upon in the future.

Next Steps

With more time, we would be able to address further points of opportunity and areas for growth—

  • Follow up with Client for additional desires and info

  • Conduct Usability Testing and User interviews

  • Conduct more interviews to solidify findings

  • Scope out further time constraints and budget for more key features within the site
